Substitutions and Variations

  • You can substitute the regular hot cocoa mix with peppermint hot cocoa when it’s in season or dark chocolate hot cocoa.
  • If the peppermint hot cocoa isn’t available, you can add 1/4 teaspoon of peppermint extract to the dip when mixing together the thawed whipped topping and hot cocoa mix.
  • For an extra chocolatey hot cocoa, fold in chocolate syrup or drizzle on top. If folding it in, I would start with 2 to 3 tablespoons of chocolate syrup and add more until it’s to your liking.
  • For a fun s’mores twist, add a 7 ounce jar of marmallow cream or fluff when mixing together the whipping topping and hot cocoa mix. Add chunks of milk chocolate bars and serve with graham crackers.
  • Use your favorite add-ins for this hot cocoa dip. Crushed peppermint candy, any flavor chocolate chips, chopped candy bars, regular mini marshmallows, etc.

Tips for Success

  • Make sure the whipped topping is fully thawed so it mixes smoothly.

Recipe FAQs

What do I serve with hot cocoa dip?

You can serve it with graham crackers, mini chocolate chip cookies, pretzels, Oreos, animal crackers, vanilla wafers, etc.

Can I make this dip ahead of time?

Yes! You can make it up to 24 hours ahead of time. Once it’s made, cover with plastic wrap and chill until it’s ready to be served.

Can I use homemade whipped cream instead of whipped topping?

I don’t recommend it. Whipped topping is stable and won’t break down as quickly as homemade whipped cream does.
