This easy 4-ingredient Hot Cocoa Dip is the perfect dessert dip. It’s light, fluffy, and packed full of hot cocoa mix. I’ve added some mini chocolate chips and dehydrated mini mallow bits to the dip to provide for of the hot cocoa flavor. Plus, who doesn’t love a little crunch?

I love a hot cocoa dessert like these Hot Cocoa Brownies and these Hot Cocoa Meringue Cookies, but this one is even easier! It takes less than 5 minutes to throw together and still looks like you’ve planned ahead. It’s perfect for holidays, a cold winter night, or anytime you just want a cozy dessert treat without turning the oven on.
Why You’ll Love This Dip
- It only requires 4 ingredients!
- It’s a quick appetizer/dessert to whip up.
- It’s so light and fluffy.
Ingredients
See the recipe card at the bottom of the post for all ingredients and quantities.
Whipped Topping – Use your favorite whipped topping, whether it’s the name brand Cool Whip or store brand. Just make sure it’s thawed.
Hot Cocoa Mix – Use your favorite hot cocoa mix.
Mini Chocolate Chips – This adds additional chocolate flavor and a nice bite feel to the dip.
Dehydrated Mallow Bits – Classic hot cocoa feel and taste while adding another nice texture to the dip.
Substitutions and Variations
- You can substitute the regular hot cocoa mix with peppermint hot cocoa when it’s in season or dark chocolate hot cocoa.
- If the peppermint hot cocoa isn’t available, you can add 1/4 teaspoon of peppermint extract to the dip when mixing together the thawed whipped topping and hot cocoa mix.
- For an extra chocolatey hot cocoa, fold in chocolate syrup or drizzle on top. If folding it in, I would start with 2 to 3 tablespoons of chocolate syrup and add more until it’s to your liking.
- For a fun s’mores twist, add a 7 ounce jar of marmallow cream or fluff when mixing together the whipping topping and hot cocoa mix. Add chunks of milk chocolate bars and serve with graham crackers.
- Use your favorite add-ins for this hot cocoa dip. Crushed peppermint candy, any flavor chocolate chips, chopped candy bars, regular mini marshmallows, etc.

How to Make Hot Cocoa Dip

Step 1: Stir together the whipped topping and hot cocoa mix until well combined.
Step 2: Fold in the mini chocolate chips and dehydrated marshmallows.
Step 3: Transfer to the serving bowl and garnish with additional chocolate chips and marshmallows. Serve or chill until you’re ready to serve!

Tips for Success
- Make sure the whipped topping is fully thawed so it mixes smoothly.
- Fold the ingredients into the whipped topping to keep the hot cocoa dip light and fluffy.
- Taste before chilling. Since hot cocoa mixes vary in sweetness and flavor, it’s a good idea to give it a taste and adjust to your liking if needed.
How to Store and Freeze
Store this dip covered with plastic wrap in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. You can give it a stir before serving if neeeded.
This hot cocoa dip also freezing nicely. Place it in a freezer-safe container and freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge before giving it a gentle stir and serving.

Recipe FAQs
You can serve it with graham crackers, mini chocolate chip cookies, pretzels, Oreos, animal crackers, vanilla wafers, etc.
Yes! You can make it up to 24 hours ahead of time. Once it’s made, cover with plastic wrap and chill until it’s ready to be served.
I don’t recommend it. Whipped topping is stable and won’t break down as quickly as homemade whipped cream does.
