I love sweet and salty, so I typically choose pretzels or wavy chips for dipping in my apple pie dip. Graham crackers are pretty darn good too!

See the recipe card at the bottom of the post for all ingredients and quantities.

Granny Smith Apples – I like Granny Smith apples for this dip because their tart flavor balances the brown sugar and cream cheese layer. They’re also a firmer apple, so they can cook down without breaking down into applesauce.

Lemon Juice – Lemon juice helps keep the apples from turning brown and brightens up the apple flavor.

Brown Sugar – I used light brown sugar, but dark brown sugar will work just as well. The hint of molasses flavor works so well with the cinnamon.

Cornstarch – Cornstarch thickens the liquid in the apple pie filling. Whisking together a slurry with cornstarch and juice from the apple pie filling helps prevent lumps.

Cream Cheese – Use an 8-ounce block of full-fat cream cheese and let it come to room temperature.

Powdered Sugar – If your powdered sugar is clumpy, sit it before mixing it in with the cream cheese; otherwise, you’ll be stuck with the lumps.

Substitutions and Variations

  • For a sweeter apple pie topping, substitute the Granny Smith apples for Honeycrisp.
  • You can also use a combination of sweet and tart apples instead of just one variety.
  • Add a pinch of nutmeg, allspice, or both to the apple filling.
  • Drizzle caramel sauce over the finished dip for a caramel apple cheesecake dip.
  • Sprinkle toasted chopped pecans over the apple pie topping for an extra crunch. This reminds me of baked apples.

Tips for the Best Apple Pie Dip

  • Let your cream cheese come up to room temperature. Cold cream cheese can leave little lumps in your filling.
  • Dice the apples evenly. Similar-sized pieces cook more evenly.
  • Don’t overcook the apples. Cook them until tender but still holding their shape.
  • Don’t dump dry cornstarch straight into the saucepan. Create a slurry with the cornstarch and the juice from the apples and add that into the saucepan.
  • Let the apple pie filling cool completely before adding it to the top of the cream cheese filling.
  • Scrape the mixing bowl while making the cream cheese mixture. Cream cheese likes to hide at the bottom of the bowl, so it’s important to get the bottom and sides with a spatula.

This is where dessert dips get fun because you’re absolutely allowed to provide an unreasonable number of dipping options.
