Crock Pot Monkey Bread - Want to get more use out of that crock pot? I have the perfect monkey bread to throw in it. My favorite part is the caramel top that coats the monkey bread!

Crock pot monkey bread! Monkey bread was one of my most favorite desserts from my childhood and is currently pretty darn high on the list. I knew it was a recipe I wanted to make into a crock pot recipe. I tend to be in and out of the house picking up my family during the week so being able to make it in the crock pot is pretty convenient for me.

Being a dessert blogger, I tend to hardly ever make the same recipe twice unless it’s requested. Dark chocolate no bake cookies and monkey bread are a couple of the most requested from the husband. Lucian normally says he wants brownies. They’re pretty easy to please which I love.

That’s the monkey bread after being cooked for two hours and 8 minutes. The biscuits look puffy, tender, and moist. It’s ready to be turned out onto a platter with a small ledge to prevent the caramel sauce from spilling off the plate. Start by removing the inner bowl. Place the platter on top of the inner bowl insert and center it. Grab your oven mitts and quickly flip the bowl. That’s it! The oven mitts are necessary. The bowl is hot and so is the sauce coming out of the bowl. If that doesn’t burn you, holding the platter might.

I normally attack the monkey bread while it’s still hot. I like it while it’s all so soft and the caramel sauce is gooey. The sauce will set up making it harder to inhale. You have to actually chew it. Ohhhh no! It’s still incredible even after it cools. I’ll tell you what. If you have a microwave, you can warm it back up to the temperature that you desire it. I don’t desire my food scalding hot, but I tend to always overdo it. Don’t be me. Save your tongue a burn.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup butter cubed
  • 1 cup light brown sugar packed
  • 4 store-bought tubes biscuits (7.5 oz tubes)
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 T. ground cinnamon

Instructions

  • Spray your crock pot with non-stick cooking spray. The crock pot is 4 quarts.
  • In a small saucepan, add in the butter and brown sugar. Heat on medium until the sauce is smooth, stirring often. It will take about 10 minutes.
  • Pour the sauce into the bottom of the prepared crock pot.
  • Remove the biscuits from the package. Cut them into quarters.
  • Add the cinnamon and sugar into a large storage bag. Seal the bag and toss it around to mix the cinnamon and sugar.
  • Add the quartered biscuits a handful at a time into the bag and toss it. Remove them and add them to the crock pot.
  • Continue to coat the biscuits in cinnamon and sugar and adding them to the crock pot.
  • Turn the crock pot to low and let cook for 2 hours - 2 hours 8 minutes. Mine was officially done at 2 hours 8 minutes.
  • Remove the inner bowl from the crock pot.
  • Place a platter with raised edges on top of the crock pot. Make sure the platter is centered. Grab your oven mitts and turn the inner bowl out onto the platter.

Is it better to use a pizza dough base ?

    1. Miranda C. says:

Hi tracy- you can definitely use pizza dough as a base. It will give it a savory, sweet taste. Enjoy!

Hello, this is a question from Australia. I would really like to try to make monkey bread but I am unable to buy ready made biscuits where I live so is a biscuit dough recipe suitable to substitute. Are the tubes of biscuits you mention in the recipe sweet or more savoury type of dough ?

    1. Miranda C. says:

Hi Tracey- the biscuit dough I am using here is a more savory kind- not too much sugar in the dough. There is enough sugar added into the filling to make it dessert-sweet. Hope this helps!

Can Splenda be an alternate for the Sugar and can Light Brown Sugar be used in lieu of the Brown Sugar? My wife is a Type 1 Diabetic but she LOVES Monkey Bread. This could be a real treat.

    Thanks,
    Keith

  7. These looks so incredibly yummy, I’m definitely going to have to try them out for myself. Thank you for sharing the recipe.

  8. Thanks for sharing the recipe Miranda. I was just wondering, what’s the difference between using a crock pot as opposed to the oven? Is there a difference in terms of texture &/or flavor in the final product?

    1. Miranda C. says:

Great question! The crockpot gives the same end result as baking the monkey bread in the oven however there are a few benefits. First, you don’t need to turn on the whole oven, keeping your kitchen cool and gas bill low! Clean-up is also super easy since you only have to wash one bowl. Slowly cooking the monkey bread will make your house smell amazing all day long. You can also start the recipe and leave the house, knowing that your monkey bread is safely cooking at home. I hope this answers your question! Enjoy.

  9. I love monkey bread, but I’ve always made it in a Bundt pan. This crock pot version is so easy! I’ll have to try this the next time I have house guests for a quick breakfast treat. Thanks for the recipe!
