Why You’ll Love This Frosting

  • Only 4 simple ingredients
  • Smooth, creamy, and easy to spread
  • Comes together in minutes
  • Classic vanilla flavor that pairs with everything

Ingredients

Butter – I used a salted butter for this frosting. Make sure to use softened butter so it mixes in the frosting easily for that light and creamy texture.

Powered Sugar – Powdered sugar is also known as confectioners sugar as well! The perfect finely ground sugar to add the right amount of sweetness.

Vanilla – Use pure vanilla extract for this frosting recipe.

Heavy Whipping Cream – This will help to thin out the frosting and give it a rich and creamy texture.

Substitutions and Variations

  • Substitute the salted butter for unsalted butter and add 1/8 – 1/4 teaspoon of salt.
  • You can substitute the vanilla extract for vanilla bean paste if you want the specks.
  • You can substitute the heavy whipping cream with whole milk if needed.
  • Add in zest of an orange, lemon or even lime to add a nice citrus twist to the frosting.
  • Instead of vanilla you could add any flavor of extract. Almond, cake batter, etc. Feel free to use any flavoring extract you would like.
  • Want a chocolate frosting? If so add in around 2-4 tablespoons of cocoa powder and adjust to your liking in terms of how much you want to add in.
  • You can mix in some fruit syrup like strawberry syrup or even jams to help add a fruity component to the frosting.
  • Stir in Items – Crushed cookies, chopped candy bars, etc. You can mix in items to add more flavor to your vanilla frosting.

How to make Vanilla Frosting

This frosting literally comes together so quickly. Here is a quick walk through on how to make. The full directions for this vanilla frosting is at the bottom of the post.

Step 1: Start by adding the softened butter into a mixing bowl and mix on medium-high speed for 3-4 minutes or until it is creamed.

Step 2: Next, slowly mix in the powdered sugar, vanilla and part of the heavy cream. Mix for 2-3 minutes.

PRO TIP: Then if it is too thick add a bit more heavy cream, or if too thin add a bit more powdered sugar.

Step 3: Once creamy and well mixed, you can refrigerate the frosting or begin using it.

Tips for Best Results

  • Make sure your butter is fully at room temperature
  • Start mixing on low to avoid a powdered sugar cloud
  • Best long enough to make it light and fluffy
  • Add cream slowly so you don’t make it too thin.
  • If you find that your frosting is too thin, add more powdered sugar 1/4 cup at a time and beat until fully combined.

How to Store and Freeze

You will want to store this frosting in the fridge in an airtight container. You will find that this homemade frosting will store for up to 2 weeks which is great if you want to make it a day earlier than when you plan to use it.

Before using it after being stored, let it come up to room temperature and rewhip it with a hand mixer on medium speed until smooth and fluffy again.

To freeze the frosting, add it to a freezer-safe container or freezer bag. Freeze for up to 2 months. Thaw in the fridge overnight before you want to use it.

Once it’s thawed, let it come up to room temperature on the counter and rewhip with the hand mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy again.

Recipe FAQs

Can I leave vanilla buttercream frosting at room temperature?

Buttercream frosting doesn’t have to be refrigerated, but you will find it is best if it is. The fats in the frosting can take on odors in the home if left out, and will alter the flavor quite a bit. It can also melt and break down if your home is too warm. So for that, it is best to refrigerate the frosting for best quality.

My frosting is too sweet! How can I fix it?

The salt in the butter is going to help pull out some of the sweetness. If you find it is still too sweet once mixed add a pinch more of salt and then test it again. Adding just a bit more salt can be a great way to lighten up the frosting.

My frosting is too soft. How can I fix it?

If you find your frosting is too soft, add a tablespoon up to 1/4 cup at a time of powdered sugar. Then mix, test texture, and if need be add more powdered sugar and repeat. Doing small increments at a time will help you have more control over the texture.

Does this frosting crust?

Yes! It will form a crust when it’s out at room temperature for a period of time. So, if you want to add sprinkles, don’t wait to do so.
