Apple Peanut Butter Dog Donuts
Want to make a homemade dog treat? These Apple Peanut Butter Dog Donuts are full of applesauce and peanut butter. They're lightly sweetened with honey and baked to perfection. They're finished with a drizzle of peanut butter.
It's been such a while since I made a dog treat for the blog, but my Sammy is getting old and I want to spoil him as much as I can. He has taken a liking to peanut butter and was actually nagging for one of these apple peanut butter dognuts. Dognuts, get it? Dog donuts. Sometimes I just crack myself up. It's probably been thought of before, but I'm going to be proud and act as if it was my clever brain that first thought it up.
These dognuts are slightly sweetened with honey, but I don't really recommend them for humans. I mean, they're safe to eat just probably a little bland. As they bake up in the oven, they smell amazing though. If you want to get in on some apple and peanut butter human treats, try this apple peanut butter crumble.
How to make Dog Donuts
To begin making these dog treats, you'll need a donut pan. Next you're going to have to grab your recipe ingredients.
- Vegetable oil - Coconut oil is a great substitute for vegetable oil and is quite beneficial for dogs. It can improve their skin and coat along with increasing energy and help with digestion.
- Creamy Peanut Butter - The peanut butter should NOT contain artificial sweeteners such as xylitol.
- Unsweetened Applesauce - I like to use unsweetened applesauce to have control what is being used to sweeten the treats. Avoid cinnamon applesauce as well.
- Honey - A touch of sweetness for the doggos.
- Baking Powder - This is the leavening agent that helps the donuts from being rock hard.
- Whole Wheat Flour - Whole wheat flour isn't highly processed like all-purpose flour and can be a good source of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and plant-based nutrients.
Next prep your donut pan with nonstick baking spray. Add the oil, peanut butter, applesauce, and honey to a mixing bowl and stir until combined.
Stir in the baking powder and whole wheat flour until just combined. Add the batter to a piping bag or large storage bag. Cut a large hole in one of the corners of the storage bag or use a large round tip in the piping bag.
Pipe the batter into each donut cavity. Place in the preheated oven and bake for 10 - 12 minutes.
How to store Dog Donuts
- You can place these dog treats in a large storage bag, but the peanut butter drizzle will smear so leave that off.
- You may add them in an airtight container such as these. They're my go-to containers.
- If you want to freeze the dog donuts, add them to a large freezer bag or freezer container.
How long do Dog Donuts last?
These apple peanut butter dog donuts will last 5 to 7 days stored in an airtight container at room temperature, as long as 2 weeks stored in the fridge, and up to 3 months in the freezer.
How to freeze Dog Donuts
To freeze these apple peanut butter dog treats, add them in a freezer bag or freezer-safe container.
If you added the peanut butter drizzle, I recommend laying them out in one layer on a baking sheet or cookie sheet. Place them in the freezer until the peanut butter drizzle is set up. Then transfer the donuts to the bag or container.

Apple Peanut Butter Dognuts
Ingredients
Dognut
- 3 tablespoons vegetable oil *see notes
- ยฝ cup creamy peanut butter **see notes
- 1 cup unsweetened applesauce
- 2 tablespoons honey
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 2 cups whole wheat flour
Drizzle
- 2 tablespoons creamy peanut butter
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray your donut pan with nonstick baking spray. The donuts will stick slightly but can be removed with a skewer. Set aside.
- In a large mixing bowl, add in the vegetable oil, peanut butter, applesauce and honey. Stir with a spatula until the peanut butter is incorporated. It will look slightly broken because of all of the applesauce.
- Add in the whole wheat flour and baking powder and stir until combined.
- Place the batter into a disposable piping bag or large storage bag. Cut the tip or corner of the bag.
- Pipe the batter into the donut pans. Don't overfill your pans.
- Place into the preheated oven and bake for 10 minutes or until done. The edges will be slightly golden and the donuts will feel firm when you press down on them.
- Remove from the oven and place them on a paper towel. Let cool for about 10 minutes. I removed them from the pan with the help of a skewer. I did not flour my pan.
- Let cool completely and prepare your peanut butter drizzle.
- Place the 2 tablespoons of peanut butter in a sandwich bag and microwave for 20 seconds. This will slightly soften the peanut butter so it's easier to pipe. Cut a very small hole into the sandwich bag.
- Move your hand back and forth over top of each dognut using even pressure. Remove any extra peanut butter hanging in the center of your dognut with the skewer or your finger will work too. The drizzle will not harden, so it can be a little messy depending on how you store them.
- Store in an airtight container at room temperature or in the fridge.
