Halloween Swirled Cupcakes

Halloween Swirled Cupcakes - Easy and adorable multicolored cupcakes and frosting. The kids will love 'em

I love everything about these Halloween swirled cupcakes. I'm a sucker for pretty swirled cupcakes. Throw some gorgeous glittery spiderweb cupcake wrappers  on top of swirled frosting and I'm all over that. You definitely have to be very careful with these colors though. Brown can strike at any moment so I recommend filling the bag to the max. This way,  you won't have to refill it and have a higher chance of getting muddy brown colors. Of course you can always completely wash out your bag before reloading it too, but who has the time or  energy for that?

If you didn't see my easy Halloween push pops, check them out. With this recipe you can make either cupcakes or push pops. I did both, because I'm a food blogger and I love Halloween. Those are my two best excuses. If you can send cupcakes or push pops to school for your child's Halloween party, these two ideas will be perfect. I was so disappointed when I was told that I couldn't make cupcakes for Lucian and his class. I'm not sure if it will be different in kindergarten, but preschool is hardcore.

Okay, so there was one difference in the recipes. I colored the cake mix orange and black instead of just black. I gave them a swirl, but didn't get too crazy with it. Again, the fear of muddy brown colors.  I also wanted to keep the top of the cupcake black so it would have more of a contrast against the purple, green and orange.

Ingredients

Cupcakes

  • 1 box box yellow cake mix
  • 3 large eggs
  • cup butter
  • 1 cup water
  • black gel paste color
  • electric orange gel paste color

Frosting

  • 1 cup butter room temperature
  • 5 cups powdered sugar
  • 4 - 6 T. heavy cream
  • Electric Orange Electric Green, Electric Purple and Regal Purple
  • Halloween sprinkles

Instructions

Cupcakes

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place orange cupcake papers in a cupcake pan.
  • Prepare the boxed cake mix like instructed. Mine required 3 eggs, ⅓ cup butter and 1 cup of water. Be sure to use what your boxed cake mix requires.
  • Divide the batter in half. Add in black gel paste color to one half and electric orange gel paste color to the other.
  • Fill the cupcake liners about ¾ full of of half orange and half black batter. I made sure the black was on top. Give it a quick swirl. I covered up any orange that came to the surface with a little black batter.
  • Place into the oven and bake for 23 minutes or until done. Check with a toothpick. If it comes out clean or with moist crumbs, it's done. If there's batter, let it bake a little longer.
  • Let cool completely.
  • Wrap the spiderweb cupcake wrappers around the cupcakes and tape the wrappers.
  • Frosting
  • In a mixing bowl, add the butter, powdered sugar and heavy cream. Mix on low until the powdered sugar is incorporated.
  • Turn the mixer on high and whip for about 2 minutes until light and fluffy.
  • Divide the frosting into thirds.
  • Color each third the one of the halloween gel paste colors. I combined the electric purple and regal purple to get the perfect purple, in my opinion. Add as much or as little. I added quite a bit to get the deep colors.
  • Place the three colors of frosting in a piping bag that's been fitted with a star tip. Be sure to use a large piping bag so you won't have to refill it. If you only have a smaller piping bag, be sure to wash it out before reusing it to keep the colors bright. Try to gets all of the colors the entire length of the bag.
  • Add a nice tall swirl of frosting to each cupcake.
  • Garnish with some festive sprinkles.
