Chocolate Cake Mix Waffles

These easy chocolate cake mix waffles are the perfect brunch treat! The outside shell of the waffles have a nice crunch while the insides are light and fluffy. They're topped with a chocolate whipped cream, chocolate syrup, and rainbow sprinkles.

My family loves to eat breakfast for dinner. I think my son loves it because he gets to help make the pancakes or waffles. The one night he had said to me, "Mama, can you make waffles with cake mix?"

This got me anxious to whip some up, mostly because I knew that my 7-year-old would be impressed if I did. So, here we are a couple of weeks later and I'm practically an expert cake mix waffle maker. I'm debating on whether the strawberry cake mix waffles or red velvet cake mix waffles will be the next ones I make.

I can just picture a stack of pink strawberry waffles with whipped cream and strawberry compote piled high.

How to make Cake Mix Waffles

There's really not too much to making these chocolate cake mix waffles. Begin by spraying your waffle maker with nonstick cooking spray and then preheating the waffle maker. I adore my Hamilton Beach Flip Belgian Waffle Maker. The plates are removable and make it SO much easier to wash.

Next, add the cake mix, water, vegetable oil, and Eggland Best's eggs to a large mixing bowl. Whisk until the eggs are incorporated. Scrape down the sides and bottom of the bowl to make sure there's no dry cake mix hanging around.

My waffle maker says to add 1 cup of batter to the center of it and cook for 5 minutes. I would recommend reading your waffle maker's directions to see the amount they recommend and for how long.

How to make Chocolate Whipped Cream

Making the chocolate whipped cream is just as easy as making the chocolate cake mix waffles.

In a large bowl, add in the heavy cream. Beat until soft peaks form. Add in cocoa powder and powdered sugar and beat until stiff peaks form.

Add the chocolate whipped cream into a piping bag with a Wilton 6B piping tip. Pipe a tall swirl on top of the cake mix waffles.

Chocolate Cake Mix Waffles

Chocolate Whipped Cream

  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa
  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
  • chocolate syrup
  • rainbow sprinkles

Instructions

Waffles

  • Spray waffle maker with nonstick cooking spray and preheat.
  • In a large mixing bowl, add in the cake mix, water, oil, and eggs. Whisk until thoroughly incorporated. Scrape the bottom of the bowl to make sure all of the dry cake mix is combined.
  • Add the batter to the preheated waffle maker. I recommend reading your waffle maker directions for the amounts and times. Mine recommends 1 cup of batter in the center of the waffle maker, close it, immediately flip it, and cook for 5 minutes.
  • Remove from the waffle maker and place on a plate.

Whipped Cream

  • In a large mixing bowl, beat the heavy cream with an electric mixer on medium until soft peaks form.
  • Add in the cocoa powder and powdered sugar. Beat until stiff peaks form.
  • Add the whipped cream into a piping bag fitted with the 6B piping tip (french star).
  • Pipe swirls of whipped cream on the waffles.
  • Drizzle chocolate syrup and add rainbow sprinkles to the top.
