This Apple Cobbler is so easy to make and is one of my absolute favorites. The filling is sweet with just a slight bite from the Honeycrisp apples loaded a warm cinnamon flavor with a light and fluffy cobbler topping.

After making the best apple pie recipe with the filling being cooked before being added to the pie crust, I knew that I was going to make it into an apple cobbler too. So I grabbed the cobbler recipe from my easy blueberry cobbler and got to work.

Ingredients

See the recipe card at the bottom of the post for all ingredients and quantities.

  • Apples – I used Honeycrisp apples because they’re my absolute favorite, but use your favorite baking apple.
  • Butter – I always use salted butter for my recipes, but unsalted works perfectly. You can add about 1/8 teaspoon of salt to the apple filling if you’re using unsalted butter.
  • Brown sugar – Apples and brown sugar go together so well. The molasses gives the filling a nice richness.
  • Baking powder – This is the leavening agent that allows the cobbler to rise.
  • Milk – Whole milk provides additonal flavor and richness to the cobbler.

Substitutions and Variations

  • You can swap out the Honeycrisp apples for your favorite baking apple, whether it’s on the sweeter side or the tart side.
  • You can switch out the spices or add additional spices that will pair well with apples to this recipe.
  • You can add nuts to either the filling or topping before baking.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Let’s do the prep work for this easy apple crisp recipe. Start by preheating the oven to 350 degrees F and greasing a 9×13 baking dish.

Step 1: Melt the butter in a saucepan and add the flour and cornstarch. Whisk while it cookes for 2 minutes. It may be lumpy and thick, but will thin out in the next step.

Step 2: Stir in the vanilla extract, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg until well incorporated.

Step 3: Once the mixture is smooth, mix in the apples and let cook for 15 to 17 minutes until fork tender. Be sure to stir the apples pretty often while they cook.

Step 4: Pour the hot apple mixture into the prepared baking dish.

How to Store and Freeze

Store this easy old fashioned apple cobbler in the refrigerator covered with plastic wrap or in an airtight container for up to 4 days. It topping will get a little soggy as the days go on and the filling will break down some.

To freeze the baked cobbler, let it cool completely. Wrap it tightly in two layers of plastic wrap, a layer of aluminum foil, and place in the freezer for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge before serving.
