Witch Hat Cupcakes

Let's face it, I'm a HUGE fan of Halloween. The holiday gets the creative juices flowing out of me. Some of my ideas tend to be a little too much for some. I really want to make some popped pimple cupcakes, but something keeps telling me not to. I probably won't listen. Now it's a time crunch to get them out before Halloween, so that will probably be the biggest factor on whether you see them this year or not.

For these cupcakes, I wanted to keep them simple, but fun. I figured that since we were building the hats, making the frosting, that a yellow cake mix would be acceptable. I don't mind a cake mix cake. I think they're moist and fluffy, but you could use your favorite recipe if you prefer.

These cupcakes remind me of the Wizard of Oz (affiliate). All I can think of is when the witch melts from the water. No wonder the poor witch was green, she couldn't even wash up! They used to play that movie a few times a year, but I haven't caught it on cable in years. What a shame too! I do like to watch it from time to time.

The key to making these hats are the candy melts. They hold the candy kiss to the Oreo thin together. They also add a cute little pop of witchy color. You can find candy melts in the cake decorating section and sometimes baking section at the store or search online. The same goes for the gel food color. It can be found in the cake decorating section, but I buy mine from Amazon. (affiliate)

Ingredients

Cupcakes

  • 1 yellow box cake mix prepared according to box
  • 3 - 5 drops electric green gel food color

Frosting

Witch Hats

  • 16 chocolate oreo thins
  • 16 candy kisses
  • ½ cup green candy melts divided
  • 1 tsp. vegetable oil

Instructions

  • Cupcakes
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line a cupcake pan with paper liners preferably a Halloween color.
  • Prepare cake mix according to the box.
  • Add the electric green gel food color to the cake batter and thoroughly incorporate.
  • Fill the liners ¾ full with cake batter.
  • Place into the oven and bake for 16 - 17 minutes or until done. Insert a toothpick into the cupcakes and if it comes out clean, it's done.
  • Remove from the oven and let cool completely.
  • Frosting
  • In a large bowl, add in the butter and cocoa powder. Beat with a hand mixer on medium until incorporated.
  • Add in the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract and beat until it comes together. Turn mixing on high and beat an addition 30 seconds.
  • Scoop the frosting into a piping bag fitted with a wilton 1M tip.
  • Pipe a swirl on top of the cooled cupcakes.
  • Witch Hats
  • In a microwave-safe bowl, add in half the green candy melts. Microwave for 30 second intervals and stir after each time. Repeat until candy melts are completely melted.
  • Add the melted candy melts in a sandwich bag. Cut a small hole into the corner of the sandwich bag.
  • Lay out 16 Oreos and Kisses on a piece of wax paper. If you were able to make more cupcakes with your box mix, make sure you have the same number of Oreos and Kisses laid out.
  • Pipe a dot of candy melt in the center of the cookie.
  • Add a candy kiss to the top of the candy melt and press down until some of the green squishes out the sides. Repeat with all of the cookies and candy kisses.
  • Microwave the remaining ¼ cup of green candy melts. Microwave for 30 second intervals and stir after each time. Repeat until the candy melts are completely melted.
  • Add in the vegetable oil and stir until thoroughly incorporated.
  • Add the candy melts into a sandwich bag and let cool for 3 - 4 minutes. Cut a small hole into the corner of the bag.
  • Add a decent size spot of candy melt to the top of each swirl of frosting. Add a witch hat to each of the spots of candy melt before moving to the next. This is to make sure the candy melts don't harden up before you get the hat on.

  1. Super cute cupcake idea. I love the green color and the towering frosting with a mini witch hat. Very creative use of the oreo thins as witch hats!
