Cherry Mountain Pie

I didn't have a sweet mountain pie until my teen years. We did so much camping when I was little, but we always had pizza mountain pies. They were my favorite and still are if I'm honest.

This cherry mountain pie recipe can easily be an apple mountain pie, blueberry mountain pie, or any other pie filling you want to use. You can even make a chocolate cherry mountain pie by sprinkling some chocolate shavings on top of the cherry pie filling.

How to make a Cherry Mountain Pie

The thing to remember about making any mountain pie is that you don't want the filling to be too close to the edges.

If you're like me and need to have whatever it is you're spreading on your bread touch all edges, don't do it this time. The filling will just pour out the sides of the bread into the mountain pie iron and make a huge mess.

  • Butter two slices of bread
  • Place the first butter side down onto the mountain pie iron
  • Add about ¼ cup of pie filling to the center of the bread. Make sure to leave plenty of room around all edges of the bread.
  • Add the other slice of bread butter side up on top of the pie filling.
  • Close the mountain pie iron and lock it.
  • Toast one side of the pie in the fire. Watch it closely, it can burn in a blink of the eye.
  • Flip and toast the other side.

Mountain Pie Iron

This is what my pie iron looks like. It's cast iron and heavy. It has a super long handle on it and at the ends are wooden. It can come apart completely and the top part interlocks so it can be hinged when you open it. The hinge comes in super handy when just checking the toastiness of the cherry mountain pie.

They make double pie irons too so you can do two pies at a time. My aunt used to have one and it seemed to work pretty well.

Pizza Mountain Pies

Does it matter what kind of bread you use to make cherry mountain pies? No, use any kind of bread you want as long as it fits inside the pie iron. Remember to take that into consideration.

Can you use homemade pie filling? You can if it isn't watery. It will need to be sort of gelled like it is from the can. If it's too watery, it will soak through the bread and you'll just end up with a big mess.

Can you use different canned pie fillings? Yep, any will do.
